California man convicted of burglary was armed with — a potato

A California man has been convicted and sentenced to one year in county jail for burglary while armed with a potato, according to the El Dorado District Attorney’s office.

In June, William James Best allegedly forced his way into the South Lake Tahoe home of the victim. He was holding a potato that had the first initial of the victim’s name carved into it, authorities said in a news release.

When police arrived, he admitted that the potato was intended to “increase his punching power.”

What’s the story?

The 41-year-old Best told police he had gone to the victim’s home to confront her about a dispute she had with his girlfriend, the release said.

Best allegedly threatened the woman repeatedly once he was inside her home.

Then police arrived and arrested him at the scene.

Best will be placed on supervised probation after he serves his one-year sentence for residential burglary, a felony offense.

If he violates the terms of his probation, Best will be sent to prison.
