Portraits from ancient Egypt (115 Pics)

These portraits date from the 1st century BC to the 3rd Century AD, during Roman rule of Egypt. Painted during the person's life on wood panel, these panels would be buried with the person when they died, affixed over the face of their mummy. The dry climate of Egypt preserved these mummy portraits for thousands of years. They are known today as the Fayum mummy portraits.
