Viral video shows teacher on the phone during class time. Now she’s under investigation.

A viral video, which shows a teacher talking on the phone during class instead of teaching, is making the rounds on the internet.

Now school officials are investigating the incident.

What are the details?

According to WCBS-TV, the viral video shows an unidentified teacher using a cellphone during a class at Hempstead High School in Hempstead, New York.

A student in the class reportedly filmed the viral video, which has been viewed more than 50,000 times on Facebook. One student in the class can be heard complaining that they’re not learning. The student, who appears to have filmed the video, noted that the teacher — who can be heard talking about Scrabble and board games — had been on the phone for an hour.

Another voice also can be heard saying, “Look at the class. Everyone’s sleeping. Asleep. Heads down.”

Facebook user Vic Pratt shared the video. He captioned it, “Meanwhile at Hempstead High School … According to the students this class was 1 hour and 15 minutes long and this ‘teacher’ chatted away on her phone the whole time while students slept, used their own phones obviously and did ZERO work … Where’s the instruction? And they wonder why those kids are under prepared for EVERYTHING!”

The Hempstead School District boasts one of the lowest graduation rates in the country, according to WCBS.

How have officials responded?

A statement from Hempstead School District Superintendent Regina Armstrong said:

The education and well-being of our students and members of our school community are priority. The situation is under investigation and the administration will take appropriate actions. The paramount concern, again, is that all of our students receive quality instruction in a safe learning environment.

Additionally, the district is reviewing policy and procedures to govern students’ and staff behavior around the following: use of cellphones during the school day; use of recording devices; and social media. Building administrators are conducting meetings and/or assembly programs to apprise staff and students of the district’s expectations and their responsibilities in these areas. The district cannot, and will not comment on matters pertaining to personnel in a public forum.

Lamont Johnson, school board president, added, “Rest assured that the situation is under investigation and the administration will take appropriate action. Additionally, the district’s leadership and resources are focused on the paramount goal of providing successful outcomes for students.

“Any further comment before the investigation is complete would be premature,” Johnson added.
