Sarah Sanders blasts Washington Post, says paper tied Trump to synagogue mass murder

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blasted the Washington Post, saying the paper tied President Donald Trump to the Pittsburgh synagogue mass murder on Saturday.

“Is there any tragedy the Washington Post won’t exploit to attack President @realDonaldTrump?” Sanders asked in a Sunday tweet. “The evil act of anti-Semitism in Pittsburg [sic] was committed by a coward who hated President Trump because @POTUS is such an unapologetic defender of the Jewish community and state of Israel.”

Under Sanders’ declaration is a tweet from New York Times’ investigative reporter Eric Lipton, who said “Wash Post front page points at Trump in both of the weeks terror attacks.”

Among the paper’s headlines are “Trump, allies set the tone for the violence they denounce, critics say” and “Bomb suspect found an inspiration in Trump,” the latter in reference to explosive devices mailed last week to high-profile Democrats, left-wing actor Robert De Niro, and CNN.

What did Trump have to say about the incidents?

  • Of the mass murder at the Tree of Life synagogue, Trump characterized it as an “evil, anti-Semitic attack,” telling an Illinois rally crowd Saturday that “anti-Semitic” killers should “pay the ultimate price.”
  • In regard to the suspicious devices sent to Democrats, Trump said “acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America. This egregious conduct is abhorrent to everything we hold dear.”
  • Trump also blasted the media during his Friday night rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, accusing journalists of trying to “score political points” in its coverage of bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc’s arrest.

The Washington Post was far from alone in pointing the finger at Trump

  • NBC News anchors Chuck Todd and Willie Geist on Sunday suggested that voters could send Trump a message at the upcoming midterm elections over the incidents.
  • CNN was excoriated on social media over a pair of chyrons that appeared to blame Trump for the package bombs.
