Barbie launches new product line including disabled dolls: 'Most diverse and inclusive doll line in the world'

Mattel is releasing a new line of Barbies come fall 2019, and two of the Barbies included in the line are disabled.

What are the details?

Two of the seven dolls have disabilities. One female Barbie is in a wheelchair, while another female Barbie has a prosthetic leg. All of the dolls in the line feature varying skin tones, hairstyles, body types, and eye colors.

The seven new dolls will help to expand the original 2016 Fashionista collection. The classic Barbie was introduced in 1959.

The expanded Fashionistas line has been designed as the "most diverse and inclusive doll line in the world," according to Mattel's Vice President Kim Culmone.

Culmone told Teen Vogue that the wheelchair Barbie was one of the most requested items from consumers.

"For 60 years, Barbie has been a reflection of culture and fashion and that is key to the brand's continued relevance," Culmone said. "This year our Barbie line will include dolls reflecting physical disabilities in order to better represent the people and the world kids see around them. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is a critical component of our design process and we are proud that today's kids will know a different image and experience of the brand."

Mattel worked with the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital to help design the doll's custom wheelchair. The doll-maker also worked with Jordan Reeves, a 12-year-old girl who has a prosthetic arm.

The company shared an Instagram post on Tuesday featuring the dolls in the new line.

The post read, "Over the years, the #Barbie#Fashionistas line has evolved to be more reflective of the world girls see around them. We're excited to expand our offerings as the most diverse and inclusive doll line in the world. Shop the new Fashionistas this Fall! #Barbie60."

The new Fashionista Barbies will be available in fall 2019.
