Conservative actor Dean Cain came to the defense of Australian lawmaker Fraser Anning on Sunday, and Twitter was not happy.

Anning, a conservative, made waves in the wake of the deadly Christchurch, New Zealand, mosque massacre after punching a 17-year-old protester in the face. The teen cracked an egg on the lawmaker's head during a televised interview about the mass killing.

The massacre took the lives of at least 50 people, and injured more after an accused mass killer opened fire on two different mosques during times of prayer. Authorities charged one person in connection to the attack.

What's a brief history of the attack on Anning?

Video of the altercation between Anning and the teen protester showed Anning discussing the massacre with reporters in Melbourne.

Anning, a senator for Queensland, was speaking with reporters when the teen approached the senator, smashing an egg on the back of his head. Anning immediately responded and struck the teen protester in the face at least two times.

Two unidentified men were able to tackle and subdue the protester until authorities arrived. The New York Times reported that the 17-year-old was arrested but later released.

Anning also stirred up controversy after appearing to blame the massacre on Muslim immigration.

In a statement, he wrote, "I am utterly opposed to any form of violence within our community, and I totally condemn the actions of the gunman. However, whilst this kind of violent vigilantism can never be justified, what it highlights is the growing fear within our community, both in Australia and New Zealand, of the increasing Muslim presence.

"The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place," he added. "Let us be clear, while Muslims may have been the victims today, usually they are the perpetrators."

So what did Cain say, anyway?

Cain issued a simple statement on the matter, concurring with Anning's decision to physically strike the teen protester.

On Twitter, Cain wrote, "I would have knocked that kid out cold."

Many Twitter users called out Cain's statement and said that Anning hitting the teen was a gross overreaction. One user wrote, "It's an egg, Dean. An egg."

Another added, "He was protesting against a horrible racist man who blame [sic] the death of those 50 people on them and their religion."

Undeterred from his original position, Cain responded, "You do that to anyone, be prepared to accept the consequences. No joke."

He later added, "You perpetuate violence upon someone, you will reap the repercussions."

In expanded remarks to The Daily Caller, Cain added, "You cannot attack someone for their political views, no matter how abhorrent. Not with an egg, not with fists, not with guns. That's wrong."

"In the U.S. we have the First Amendment which protects all speech, including unpopular speech, as long as it doesn't call for violence," he added. "While I totally disagree with what I've seen of the senator's positions, is it illegal for him to hold them? Should he be physically attacked because of them?"
