Alyssa Milano tries to shame pro-lifers over detained immigrants—and it went poorly for her

Actress and activist Alyssa Milano tried to use a story about a premature baby at an immigrant detention center to attack people who are pro-life, but she didn't get the response she may have expected.

A baby was reportedly born prematurely at a detention center in south Texas, and was in need of immediate medical attention to survive.

Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon heard about the situation from Milano's tweet, and said that he made an emergency call to the Department of Homeland Security. The family was reportedly released shortly after.

As this was all playing out, Milano thought it would be a fine time to take a shot at people who oppose abortion. She made a comment that vaguely referenced recent "heartbeat" bills that have gone through some state legislatures.

"Asylum seekers have heartbeats," Milano wrote. "So take your fake 'pro-life' hypocrisy and shove it where the sun don't shine."

The tweet quickly caught the attention of users eager to point out the obvious fallacy in her comparison—pro-lifers believe it should be illegal both to kill an unborn baby, and to kill an asylum-seeking immigrant. Pro-abortion advocates, however, are not so consistent.

"Glad we're on the same page on the value of heartbeats," The Daily Wire's Ben Shapiro replied. "So let's provide Border Patrol the resources necessary to humanely process everyone, and also protect the unborn. Oh, what's that? You think people should be able to kill the unborn? So you're just being a hack again."

It's clear what Milano was going for there, and it's likely many in her audience will interpret it this way: To some liberals, the conservative position against open borders is equivalent to wishing death on illegal immigrants. Detaining people caught illegally crossing the border is worse than killing an unborn child.

Of course, making an argument based on the value of a human heartbeat only works if all heartbeats matter. And yet Milano insists on valuing the heartbeat of a baby born prematurely, while refusing to do the same for a baby whose heart is beating inside the womb.
