‘BoycottMulan’ Hashtag Explodes On Twitter After Disney Film’s Lead Offers Support For Hong Kong Police Amid Claims Of Brutality

On Wednesday, actress Liu Yifei, who is set to play the title role in the upcoming Disney remake of "Mulan," ignited social media backlash after she shared a post to Weibo, a Chinese social media platform, in which she stated her support for Hong Kong police.
"I also support the Hong Kong police," wrote Liu next a heart emoji and a bicep emoji. Beneath Liu's text, the actress shared an image posted by People's Daily, a state-run news outlet, that featured the following text:
I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong.
Liu's repost has been shared 76,000 times and "liked" more than 82,000 times on Weibo.
The actress' social media post led to the hashtag #BoycottMulan on Twitter, which has been tweeted more than 67,100 times and is trending at #23 on the social media platform as of publication.
Twitter users roundly condemned Liu's support of Hong Kong's police:
Mulan is fighting for the defenseless peeps and Liu Yifei is supporting hongkong brutality.

Support Liu’s Mulan = Support Police’s Abuse of Power

The spirit of Mulan is about bravery, not fighting the citizens with unlimited force.

Disney’s Mulan actress, Liu Yifei, supports police brutality and oppression in Hong Kong.

Liu is a naturalized American citizen. it must be nice. meanwhile she pisses on people fighting for democracy.

Others targeted Disney more directly:
Mulan is about a female taking control and fighting for her own destiny. Liu Yifei supporting an entity that assaults women who dare to voice their opinion shows her indifference. @Disney is willing to ignore this for the big bucks in China, but we shouldn't.

In one exchange, a Twitter user defended Disney, noting that the company couldn't have known what its star would say two years after they cast the film:
It couldn’t have known of course. But now that it’s there in the open, what is the right thing to do in the face of repression in HK? Perhaps Disney can’t/won’t do anything rad for the sake of its money. But moviegoers can.
Disney will obviously (we all know this) release the movie as it cost them well over $300M. But yes like you said, audiences can! We can choose whether to support her films. I just don’t want people to target the wrong person or thing.

The recent protests in Hong Kong began after a bill was introduced that would allow suspected criminals to be extradited to China, which many in the nation see as an encroachment of the Chinese government on Hong Kong's independence.
"Progressively, police actions toward protestors have become increasingly violent, some of which has been documented in videos showing police brutality. Footage shows uniformed police bashing protestors heads in with clubs and shooting rubber bullets and tear gas at demonstrators."
