Wisconsin inmate confesses to infamous 'Making a Murderer' slaying, filmmaker claims

Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey have spent more than a decade in prison after being convicted of the 2005 murder of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach. They received international attention after the Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer" cast doubt on their guilt.

 

On Monday, Newsweek reported an explosive development in the infamous case.

Filmmaker Shawn Rech, who has spent more than a year working on the upcoming film "Convicting a Murderer," says a Wisconsin inmate confessed to his film crew that he is responsible for killing Halbach.

The inmate's name was not released because law enforcement is investigating the legitimacy of the confession. However, Rech said the inmate was not Avery or Dassey.

"We haven't confirmed the legitimacy of the confession, but seeing as it was given by a notable convicted murderer from Wisconsin, we feel responsible to deliver any and all possible evidence to law enforcement and legal teams," Rech told Newsweek.

"Having been in production for 20 months, we've uncovered an unfathomable amount of information and evidence that is leading us to the truth. Our investigation does not end here," he explained.

Rech's documentary will be a sequel to "Making a Murderer," according to Newsweek. He intends to tell the story more objectively, filling in gaps left by the first documentary, which some say misled viewers by withholding certain evidence pointing to the guilt of Avery and Dassey.

Avery and Dassey were convicted of Halbach's murder in 2007 and both were sentenced to life in prison.

However, both men have maintained their innocence. Avery continues to appeal his conviction, while Dassey exhausted his appeals last year when the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal.
