Cops nab suspect for allegedly assaulting a man wearing a Russian MAGA hat

 

Authorities arrested David Delgado at his Winnetka, California, home in connection with an attack that took place Sept. 2.

Delgado, 32, reportedly assaulted a man who was wearing a Russian "MAGA" hat while in a Hermosa Beach restaurant restroom.

According to KTLA-TV, the unnamed victim, who was wearing a pro-Trump hat, had just entered the men's room when Delgado approached him, asking him about the hat.

A news release from the Hermosa Beach Police Department revealed that the hat featured Trump's 2016 campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again," but was written in Russian. Delgado reportedly began to repeatedly punch the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground. Delgado, who reportedly continued to punch the victim in the face while he remained on the floor, then allegedly took the hat and fled the scene.

Authorities used surveillance footage to identify Delgado and later arrested him at home on charges of suspicion of robbery and battery with serious injury.

Delgado was being held on $100,000 bail.

An award-winning author in September called for people stop wearing red baseball caps altogether, because they too closely resemble Trump's signature campaign hats.

Rebecca Makkai, who previously won the National Book Award with 2018's "The Great Believers," made the impassioned plea on one of her social media accounts.

On Twitter, Makkai admitted that red hats simply make her uneasy.

"Is anyone else made really uncomfortable these days by anyone wearing any kind of red baseball cap?" she wrote. "Like, I see one and my heart does weird s**t and then I finally realize it only says Titleist or whatever. Maybe don't wear red caps anymore, normal people?"

Makkai would later compare red hats to swastikas, saying that Hindu people — who considered the swastika sacred — chose to avoid using the symbol because of its association with Nazis.

"If you're here to be contrary: an equivalent here would be western Hindus choosing not to use the swastika symbol in public despite it being sacred to their faith because it would offend/frighten people," she added in a tweet. "The red hat has become a symbol of hate bc of how its wearers act."
