Named for:
Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, a renowned WWII veteran and former Chief of Naval Operations.

The namesake of the class "The BURKE" was laid down in Maine in September of 1988. She is equipped with 4 General Electric LM2500-30 Gas Turbines that make 100,000 total shaft horsepower and can reach speeds in excess of 30 knots. She carries the powerful SPY-1 radar as well as a variety of weapons and sensors for surface, undersea, and air warfare as well as being capable of firing the Tomahawk land attack missile (BGM-109 series) that can reach hundreds of miles ashore.

USS ARLEIGH BURKE has earned one Navy Unit Commendation, three Meritorious Unit Commendations, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, five Sea Service Deployment Ribbons and she has won the Battle "E" an noteworthy seven times.
