Georgia girl, 12, with no pre-existing medical conditions is on a ventilator 'fighting for her life' after contracting coronavirus

A 12-year-old girl with no pre-existing conditions is on a ventilator and ‘fighting for her life’ in an Atlanta hospital after she tested positive for the coronavirus.
The girl, who was only identified as Emma, was diagnosed with pneumonia on March 15.
She has since tested positive for coronavirus, her cousin, Justin Anthony, told CNN.
Anthony said that Emma had no pre-existing conditions and did not travel recently to any foreign country.
The family does not know how she contracted the virus, according to Anthony.

Anthony said Emma was placed on a ventilator at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.
The hospital confirmed that a patient tested positive for COVID-19, but declined to go into details.
‘The patient remains in isolation, and we have consistently used appropriate precautions,’ a hospital spokeswoman told CNN.
‘Additional details will not be released due to patient privacy laws.’
Anthony told CNN that Emma's mother approved him telling her story to the media in order to get the message out that young people were also in harm's way.

'I know first hand how dangerous it is,' Anthony said.
'Everyone keeps saying "it doesn't impact younger people."

'But here's a 12-year-old fighting for her life.
'People need to practice social distancing. People need to take care of their children.
'People need to take this seriously.'
Emma's uncle Damian Anthony put out a plea from the young girl's mom to pray for the child.
'I have sad news to tell you,' he posted on Facebook yesterday.
'My niece Emma has contracted the CV. My sister asks you to pray for our family, yours and the rest of the world.
Damian, who describes himself as a construction company director from Johannesburg in South Africa on social media, continued: 'Nobody knows anything about this virus. It has attacked Emma and they have no solution but to fight the symptoms has they appear.
'If this message can save one Life. Amen Please let everyone you know how serious this is. In Jesus name rebuke you the Coronavirus.'
Medical experts have stressed that older people and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of falling seriously ill from the virus.
Children can contract and spread the virus, but their symptoms are generally milder.
Earlier this week, a South Carolina mother posted an image of her seven-month-old son after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Courtney Watts Doster shared images of her sick seven-month-old son Emmett Wednesday - the youngest person to test positive in the country.
It's unclear where the baby contracted coronavirus but Doster's mother was in close proximity with her child before she knew she was ill.
Doster – a married mother-of-three – was alarmed when Emmett developed a high fever on Monday but she wasn't sure whether the baby could be tested for COVID-19.
The results came back positive on Tuesday and now Doster is worried about her children aged two and four.
By Wednesday she said, 'Emmett was feeling much better.'
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some 40 per cent of coronavirus hospitalizations have been for people between the ages of 20 and 54.
The World Health Organization on Friday warned the public that young people were still susceptible to falling seriously ill if they contracted coronavirus.

With more than 340,000 cases reported worldwide and a death toll of 14,500, each day brings a 'new and tragic milestone,' WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
'Although older people are hardest hit, younger people are not spared. Data from many countries clearly show that people under 50 make up a significant proportion of patients requiring hospitalization,' Tedros told a virtual press conference.
'Today I have a message for young people: You are not invincible, this virus could put you in hospital for weeks or even kill you.
'Even if you don’t get sick the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else,' he said.

For the first time the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the outbreak’s epicenter, reported no new cases on Thursday, 'providing hope for the rest of the world that even the most severe situation can be turned around,' Tedros said.
Amid global shortages of protective gear for health workers and diagnostic tests, Chinese producers have agreed to supply the WHO, he said.
Arrangements are being finalized and shipments coordinated to restock its Dubai warehouse to ship supplies where they are needed most, he added.
