‘It Wasn’t Me’: Homeowner Allegedly Defending Himself From Burglar Fatally Shot By Cops In Graphic Video

 Police in Austin, Texas, have released body camera and Ring doorbell footage showing the moment a homeowner was fatally shot by the police while allegedly defending his home from a burglar.

The incident unfolded on Nov. 15 around 12:28 a.m., when police received a call about a man with a gun across the street. The caller told police the man was pointing the rifle down the street, according to Austin police. The caller, who remained on the line, then told authorities that the man, who was later identified as Rajan David Moonesinghe, was pointing his rifle at the house.

The caller then claimed that Moonesignhe had fired a round into the house.

Video footage shows Moonesignhe standing near the front door of his own home with the rifle before walking down the steps and briefly pointing it toward the street. He then returns to the door and points his gun at the house.

In the video, Moonesignhe can be heard talking, saying, “Do you want this?” and “Are you sure? My God, you’re fucking stupid.” It is unclear who he was talking to.

Moonesignhe appears to fire one shot into his home at the same time Officers Daniel Sanchez and Stephen Market arrive on the scene, soon after the call was placed.

Another shot is heard before Moonesignhe reemerges from the house. As Moonesignhe turns the corner, police are heard screaming, “Drop the gun,” before firing.

According to the police report, Sanchez “gave [Moonesinghe] a verbal command to drop the gun” and “immediately … fired” his weapon, striking Moonesinghe.

Video shows Moonesignhe stumbling back after being shot several times and then falling out of view of the camera.

“It wasn’t me, fuck,” Moonesignhe can be heard saying. Authorities then tell Moonesignhe to put his hands up, prompting him to once again say, “It wasn’t me.”

Officers waited for a third officer to arrive on scene before approaching Moonesinghe, who had been shot several times. Authorities transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the did not find anyone inside the residence. The incident remains under investigation.

Moonesignhe’s family said police did not give him enough time to respond to their commands.

Moonesignhe’s mother and brother told NBC News that Moonesignhe had returned from a trip and believed his home had been burglarized.

“He did nothing wrong,” Johann Moonesignhe reportedly said. “He had a gun … he was defending his house and he didn’t point the gun. He was not menacing. He didn’t look like he was going to shoot anyone.”
