A woman who was shot dead by her estranged Canadian husband in the middle of Lower Manhattan on Monday was planning to divorce him and had been secretly dating a co-worker for a year, it's been revealed.

Police said Xin Yu, 46, ambushed his wife, 40-year-old Min Ai, outside her apartment at Greenwich and Morris streets just before 9am as she headed to work.

The couple began arguing and Yu slashed Ai with a knife before fatally shooting her in the head and torso in the middle of the street, according to the authorities.

Yu then turned the gun on himself, suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

One witness said Yu still had the gun in his hand after he shot himself.

'I took the gun from his hand while he was still breathing. I just did it just to be safe. I took it really quick and put it on the ground next to my foot,' the woman said to the New York Daily News.

'I just did what needed to be done to make sure no one else got hurt. I really didn’t think about it,' she added.

At the time of the attack, Yu was carrying the couple's marriage certificate, according to police speaking to ABC 7 NY.

Ai was pronounced dead at the scene, while Yu succumbed to his injuries at New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital just 15 minutes later.
