Donald Trump made a surprise stop at campaign event for former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as she runs for Arkansas governor.

Sanders, whose father Mike Huckabee served as the 44th Governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007, had announced her campaign in January.

'Great weekend on the campaign trail featuring a surprise appearance at one of my events by President Trump!' she tweeted Sunday night with a photo of her and Trump.

It was not immediately clear where and when the fundraising event was held and who else attended.

On Sunday, Sanders also posted a photo with former Georgia state representative Vernon Jones, an ex-Democrat who has become a vocal Trump supporter.

'Let me be clear about who will be the next Governor of Arkansas, @SarahHuckabee! She's smart, educated, knowledgeable, and experienced,' he tweeted on Sunday, declaring his endorsement for Sanders.

'But most of all, she cares about you, me, and she loves our country! Join me in supporting Sarah for Arkansas Governor.'

Sanders thanked Jones for his endorsement in a post to her Instagram stories.

Jones' endorsement may prove controversial for the former press secretary, as the Georgia lawmaker addressed crowds before the deadly storming of the United States Capitol on January 6.

'They don't know they have awakened a sleeping giant,' said Jones, according to WGCL-TV.

'I'm officially joining the Republican party!'

After the riot, Jones tweeted: 'To the peaceful Patriots who came to our nation's capital today, we cannot drown out our message with violence. We are not ANTIFA or a lawless mob. We are Americans who believe in the rule law and follow the principles of our constitution.'

Earlier this year, Sanders received a glowing endorsement from Trump - who touted that she is 'strong on borders, tough on crime and fully supports the second amendment and our great law enforcement officers.'

'She loves our military and veterans — and her home state of Arkansas. She will be a GREAT Governor and she has my complete and total endorsement,' Trump said in the statement.

Sanders, who replaced Sean Spicer as press secretary in 2017 and served in the role until 2019, thanked the her former boss for the endorsement.

'Thank you President Trump for your endorsement and for always believing in me. As governor I will defend our freedom and lead with heart,' she tweeted after the endorsement,' she tweeted in January.
