Gunman is shot dead by off-duty sheriff's deputy after opening fire in crowded Houston nightclub, killing one person and injuring two others

A gunman opened fire in a crowded Houston nightclub early Monday before being shot and killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy working security.

The gunman began firing at the Clé club at 1.21am on Monday and was shot and killed when an off-duty Harris County sheriff's deputy returned fire, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.

A second person was killed in the gun battle, and two were injured - one critically.

Houston police confirmed on Monday afternoon that the deputy had shot and killed the gunman. It was unclear who had shot the three other people but it was not the deputy, police said.

The two injured people were taken to hospital: one remains in a critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds and the other was discharged after being shot in the leg.

No deputies were injured in the gun battle, and the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

At a press conference soon after the shooting, Police Chief Finner said it was a 'difficult scene - a lot of moving parts'. He added that the club was 'very crowded' and dark inside.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said several of his deputies were working off-duty security at the club and that at least one of them fired at the gunman. He said no deputies were hurt in the shooting, Fox San Antonio reported.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has suspended the alcohol license for Clé nightclub for seven days to conduct an investigation, KHOU reported.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Houston PD.
