Ocasio-Cortez Defends Selling $58 Sweatshirts After Elon Musk Trolls Her

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended selling $58 sweatshirts after Twitter CEO Elon Musk trolled her.

Musk and Ocasio-Cortez sparred Wednesday over alleged plans to charge verified users a monthly subscription fee to keep their blue checks. The New York congressman first tweeted, “lmao at a billionaire earnestly trying to sell people on the idea that ‘free speech’ is actually a $8/mo subscription plan.”

Musk responded to her tweet saying her “feedback is appreciated, now pay $8.”

Musk later tweeted a photo of Ocasio-Cortez’ sweatshirt, which the congresswoman infamously sold for $58 with the slogan “Tax the Rich.”

Ocasio-Cortez responded that her “workers are union, have full healthcare + benefits like childcare help, and everyone is paid a living wage. Proceeds go to community acts like tutoring underserved kids. You’re a union buster with an ego problem who pockets the change from underpaying and mistreating people.”

The New York representative then alleged she was being censored by Musk, taking to Instagram to talk about the ordeal and defend her pricey sweatshirts.

Ocasio-Cortez said Musk was trying to make it like “some kind of like ‘gotcha’ that other people pay money for goods, emphasis on real goods in the world. But here’s the thing is that unlike Elon Musk all the workers with our campaign, our campaign is unionized, we pay full healthcare, we have other benefits like childcare stipends.”
