Man wearing Trump T-shirt admits abusing worshippers at New Zealand mosque

A New Zealand man may face prison after admitting abusing worshipers outside the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, where 42 people were killed in a terrorist attack last month.

Daniel Nicholas Tuapawa, 33, is alleged to have hurled Islamophobic abuse last Wednesday evening. He was wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Trump" at the time, police said.

Tuapawa appeared Friday in Christchurch District Court and admitted disorderly behavior. The charge carries a possible prison term of three months, or a fine of up to NZ$2,000 ($1,350).

"The community is understandably shaken by this behavior," said Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price, adding that two armed officers had been outside the mosque at the time.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, has been charged with 50 counts of murder after the attack on the Al Noor mosque and another mosque on March 15.

According to CNN affiliate Radio New Zealand, Tuapawa said all Muslims were terrorists and must get out of New Zealand.

"Our community has no tolerance for those who target or victimize others because of their identity, and nor does the police," said Price in a statement. "This is especially so for members of our Muslim community who are already dealing with so much."

A court spokeswoman confirmed that Tuapawa had pleaded guilty. CNN has reached out to his lawyer for comment.

Tuapawa was granted bail, according to RNZ, and is due back in court in July for sentencing.

The guilty plea comes the same day as New Zealand's new gun laws take effect. These ban military-style semi-automatic firearms, although gun-owners will have an amnesty until the end of September to hand in their weapons.
