Sen. Mazie Hirono brags to protesters that she rallied school girls in support of abortion
Abortion activists descended upon the steps of the Supreme Court on Tuesday in support of Roe v. Wade and "reproductive justice," and in protest of states, such as Alabama, that have passed new laws and restrictions on abortion.
Democrats in office and 2020 Democratic candidates showed up to take the megaphone and say their piece, in particular blasting the Supreme Court and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, though the laws are set by states.
Hawaii Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono used her time in front of the crowd to fire up the protesters with a tale of school kids in Hawaii who are worried about their abortion rights and to brag about how she rallied those children.
"I just left 60 eighth-graders from a public school in Hawaii, and I told them I was coming to a rally in front of the Supreme Court, and they said, 'Why?'" Hirono said. "I said it's because we are — we have to fight for abortion rights, and they knew all about it."
The crowd was enthusiastic.
"I asked the girls in that group of eighth graders: How many of you girls think that government should be telling us, women, when and if we want to have babies? Not a single one of them raised their hands," she continued.
Getting kids to love abortion is apparently pretty popular with the protesters because they cheered wildly at this.
"And then, the boys who were there among the 60, I told them, you know, it's kind of hard for a woman to get pregnant without you guys," she said, and the crowd laughed. "They got it."
Lots of gender assumptions and cis-hetero posturing there, but we'll move on.
She said she asked the male students, "How many of you boys think that government should be telling girls and women when and if we're going to have babies? And not a single one of them raised their hand," again to great excitement from the gathered abortion enthusiasts.

She also got a big reaction — that is, raucous booing — when she brought up Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Other Democrats such as Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), Rep. Jackie Speier (Calif.), and 2020 candidates, including Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.) and Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.), also took the megaphone and likewise got the crowd frenzy level raised by mere mention of Kavanaugh.
When Booker was up, he said Georgia and Alabama "will not have the last word" on their respective state laws. He also said that when it comes to abortion, there can "be no neutrality."
"Do you stand with freedom, or do you stand with tyranny?" Booker asked. "Do you stand with self-determination, or do you stand with the kind of laws that take away liberty, that take away freedom, that take away your own economic choices?"
A great question that could be asked of Booker and Hirono on literally dozens of policy issues.
"This is an assault on the ideals of our nation," he said without apparent irony.
